The nutrients contained in food supplements, such as vitamins or minerals, are also contained in normal foods – but in concentrated form and usually in increased doses. They are provided, for example, in the form of tablets, capsules, powders, effervescent tablets or liquids. Food supplements can contain plant substances (garlic), animal substances (fish oil) or synthetically produced substances, such as most vitamins.

Distribution without restriction

Food supplements can be purchased without a prescription. They are therefore not only available in the pharmacy, but also in any conventional drugstore or supermarket. Some are offered as part of an (alternative) treatment. However, they may not have the same effect as medicines, such as lowering or raising blood pressure or blood sugar levels. If the product has this effect, it must be licensed as a medicine.
